How to optimize page URLs

The Page URL is what a user enters in the address bar of a browser to visit your web page. Usually it looks something like http://www.hubspot.com.

It is important for SEO to use target keywords in the URL itself. If you were Google and you saw a page with the URL www.hubspot.com/keyword-analysis-tools, what would you think the page was about? It would be a good guess this page is about keyword analysis tools, since that's what the URL says.

The Best Practices

When incorporating keywords into the URLs of your pages, consider the following:

  • Keywords that appear earlier in the URL are weighted more heavily than ones late in the URL. The more important a page is, the closer it should be to the root level of your site. In the above example, Keyword Analysis Tools is clearly a very important page to HubSpot or it wouldn't be right at the root level.
  • Keep URLs short - Normally, you should add just 1 or 2 keywords into the URL.
  • Separate words with dashes, not underscores or other characters.
  • Parameters like "?" and "%" in a URL can confuse search engines, and should be avoided at all costs. HubSpot CMS users will automatically have clean URLs. If you are not on HubSpot CMS, ask your web developer to rename the URLs, hiding the parameters.
  • Make sure that the keywords you choose are actually reflected and used in the page's content - It's no use to have a page with a keyword-rich URL if the page isn't actually about that keyword.

How to Edit Your Page URL

If you're hosting your site on the HubSpot CMS, you can modify any website page URL by following these instructions.

Navigate to the page you'd like to edit the URL for. Then click Page Properties in the upper-left hand side of the page.
